As I am writing this, the forecast is highs in the mid 90s all week. No wonder we got a question about using condensate yesterday. Condensate is great water to use on your lawn, or wherever you want. A good rule of thumb is that Your air conditioner will generate about a gallon of water per square foot per month during the months that it runs. Obviously a little more during hot humid months.!
If you already have a Rainwater Harvesting system connected to your irrigation, then adding condense recovery is rather easy. The condensate is generated at your air conditioner, coil, which is right next to your furnace fan. It’s possible that the condensate can flow by gravity to the pipe, you see outside. however, it’s very common to need a condensate pump. This very small reservoir and pump parentheses smaller than a loaf of bread parentheses will accept a gravity, flow inlet, and then pump it through a flexible tube. This tubing can be extended to your Rainwater tank. Viola, instant condensate recovery.
Obviously, if you don’t have a Rainwater collection system yet, then you will need a reservoir and probably a pump. If all you want to do is water the tomatoes on your patio, then simply putting the watering bucket under the existing discharge pipe would be enough.
Due to the fact that the water quality has not been tested, we would not recommend drinking condensate water, even after treatment. But it would be fine for watering your plants or flushing toilets.
